MAMMA MIA! (D: Phyllida Lloyd, 108 min) Rating: NNNNN
If you saw Prairie Home Companion, you know that Meryl Streep can sing, so her star turn in Mamma Mia! is really not a stretch. Mind you, since La Streep can do anything, what’s to worry? Well, there’s the trailer, for one thing, which makes the film seem silly, and the fact that film adaptations of stage musicals can be putrid. But ABBA’s songs are even better show tunes than pop songs, so take a chance on this.
Opens Friday (July 18). Screened after press time – see review July 17 at nowtoronto.com.
