It’s been fairly quiet on the livestream concert front lately thanks to the recent round of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions.

But here’s something to look forward to: Montreal band Marie Davidson & L’Œil Nu are releasing a livestream concert directed by Quebec filmmaker Denis Côté.

The one-off show, called Renegade Breakdown Live, will air on March 11 via the platform Noon Chorus (get tickets here). It will be available for rebroadcast for 72 hours.

“Renegade Breakdown Live is first and foremost a film, Denis Côté’s vision,” Davidson and L’Œil Nu said in a statement. “Without ever directing us, he captured our first ever performance as a band, exploring the possibilities of what a filmed live show could be in 2021.

“Even if we are at the centre of it, the surroundings, the crew, the audience, the gear and the mishaps are an equally important part of it, creating a unique document and experience for the viewer. The end result is as eerie and honest as it can get.”

Côté, who’s credits include Ghost Town Anthology and Vic + Flo Saw A Bear, calls the show a “freeform concert.”

“For the concept, I imagined the performance as a laboratory experiment. Without completely turning my back on the festive aspects, I favoured something a little colder, which leads to a certain purity of the act of watching a concert,” he said.

Following her celebrated 2018 album Working Class Woman and subsequent retirement from club music, Davidson formed the new trio with Pierre Guerineau and Asaël R. Robitaille.

Last year they released the album Renegade Breakdown via label Ninja Tune. A new remix project is also on the way, featuring reworkings by Jlin,  Young Marco and Morgan Geist.
