Martha And The Muffins

Rating: NNN

Has it really been 30 years since Martha and the Muffins used a topographical map of our city on the cover of their 1979 debut, Metro Music? Although that map would look considerably different today, Martha Johnson and Mark Gane remain rooted in the same new wave, art pop concepts they employed during their early-80s peak.

In All I Know, Johnson delivers her clear, direct lyrics in the same deadpan you’d recognize from their semi-famous tune Echo Beach. Gane bedrocks the track with hard-rock guitar, then takes over vocals for Love Began With Eve, which also highlights the understated keyboard work present throughout the album. It’s the band’s first record in 18 years, and not too shabby considering the layoff.

Top track: Love Began With Eve

Martha and the Muffins play the Music Gallery February 5 and 6.
