MasterChef Canada’s Eric Chong to open R&D

R&D, a new restaurant from MasterChef Canada winner Eric Chong and his mentor, three Michelin star chef (Bo Innovation in Hong Kong) and one Michelin star (for Bo London in London) Alvin Leung, is set to open the first week of April. It will replace Italian restaurant Strada 241.

Going back to the areas Chinese roots, the menu will be a melange of Canadian and Chinese cuisine, says Leung. Meals picked up from their travels throughout Asia (and a nod to their Malaysian and Hong Kong roots) will be on offer, like Grandpas Fun Guo (chicken with black truffle) and Little Dragon Buns (spicy Sichuan lamb or chicken tom yum). Playful dishes mixing the Canadian with the Asian, like General Sanders Chicken (Kung pao sauce, Sichuan maple syrup and Hong Kong egg waffles) will complement fusion cocktails like toasted coconut and chai spiced pina coladas, a twist on bubble tea.

The name, which stands for Rebel & Demon, is also a play on the pairs engineering backgrounds (R&D can also stand for research and development), which translates to a precision of flavours and presentation on the plate.

R&D will be open in April for lunch Thursday through Sunday, 11:30 to 3 and for dinner nightly, from 5PM, with a bar menu available until late. See listing.
