MC5Kick Out The Jams Rating: NN Rating: NN

With the release of the controversial MC5 documentary A True Testimonial still tied up in legal limbo, it makes sense that anyone holding some live footage of the band would try to cash in with a DVD of his or her own. Cue photographer Leni Sinclair, ex-wife of former MC5 manager John Sinclair, who has edited together her amateur-shot performance clips with generic “frolicking hippie” crowd shots, marching soldiers, swirling oil-drop images, flashing lights and underground newspaper headlines of the period into a 35-minute “kaleidoscopic mind trip.”

However, the sped-up images of the MC5 onstage – not even close to being in sync with the soundtrack – have been chopped up and used indiscriminately to accompany whatever song happens to be playing in the background. This turns what could’ve been an enlightening glimpse behind the scenes into a comedy show. The John Sinclair interview tacked on as a bonus just adds to the laughs as the foggy-minded former revolutionary belches up a storm after eating a burger and then racks his brain for the next 10 minutes trying to remember how he came to meet the group that would change his life and music history. Kinda sad, actually.
