Michele Landsberg celebrates 70 years

I was lucky enough to be among those who helped esteemed feminist activist and writer Michele Landsberg celebrate her 70th birthday at a gathering at the AIA Hall on Algonquin Island last Sunday (July 12).

We all snacked on sweets and drank champagne while Landsberg received her many friends and admirers, including writers, health activists and theatre artists who honoured her literary achievements and her involvement with Women’s College Hospital and Nightwood Theatre.

Husband Stephen Lewis looked on, alongside daughters Jenny Lewis, who works in film and television and the Stephen Lewis Foundation‘s Ilana Landsberg-Lewis and her partner musician Lorraine Segato, and son Avi Lewis, the journalist and filmmaker and his partner, author Naomi Klein (pictured right).

Heather Mallick and Jan Wong were among the other journalists at the event, Kelly Thornton, Deb Filler and Diane Flacks headed up the theatre contigent and many others drank in the islands’ natural beauty while feting one of the country’s most influential feminists.

As we headed outside of the main hall for the formalities, Michele assured me that there would be no speeches, as she’d insisted that there be none. But come on! Could her brother resist telling a few stories about Michele who, apparently, was outspoken at age five? No.

And would you want to be an at an event honouring Stephen Lewis’s wife and not hear from one of the best public speakers on the planet? Didn’t think so.

And yes, he did step in with some choice words.

Mother nature smiled on the whole thing, as did the gods on all of us when they placed Michele Landsberg on this earth.[rssbreak]
