The show Morrissey did at Maple Leaf Gardens when I was a teenager was one of the most intense live shows I’ve ever seen. A non-stop stream of fanatics were throwing themselves onstage and struggling with bouncers to get to him, and he ended up walking off the stage until security could get control of the situation. The bouncers in Manchester are used to it, though, and despite the crowd’s frantic efforts, no one gets more than their torso onto the stage before being pulled away, the Mozzer reaching out to touch their hands as they’re carried away crying. Not bad for an 80s pop icon on his 45th birthday. The set list includes Smiths favourites and the best moments of his early solo career, but also makes a very strong case for his newest album. The band sounds great, and he even looks sort of cheerful for a change. A welcome reminder of why the Smiths were loved so deeply.
