Most People – Violet Spaces EP

Toronto electronic duo Most People’s 2012 self-titled debut charmed us with its relaxed, eccentric ambient pop, but their new Violet Spaces EP finds Brandon Gibson-DeGroote and Paul McEachern going for more uptempo dance-floor-friendly vibes. The three original songs owe a lot to 80s new wave, while the four remixes by other artists bring more modern references to the fore. If the indie dance parties of the early 00s were still a big thing these songs would fit in perfectly.

There’s nothing wrong with this poppier direction, but we hope they reserve room for more downtempo and experimental moments on their next album the weirder tangents were the most exciting parts of their debut. The remixes help reintroduce unpredictability: Eytan Tobin and Slow Pitch Sound both play with fluid IDM d ‘n’ b breakbeats, Digits goes for full-on synth pop, and Zoo Owl flips his track into contemporary electronic pop territory.

Top track: Telephone (Zoo Owl remix)

Most People play the Clay and Paper Theatre on Saturday (May 23).
