‘Islamophobic fear-mongering,’ Muslim advocacy group calls on Ontario MPP to retract Israel-Gaza statements

A national Muslim organization is accusing an Ontario MPP of posting “dangerous” and “fear mongering” information about the Israel-Gaza conflict on social media.

On Wednesday, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) published a series of posts on X calling on Member of Provincial Parliament for Carleton Goldie Ghamari to take down her statements and retweets that “peddle Islamophoic tropes.”

“We ask Premier @fordnation if this kind of conduct is acceptable in his caucus,” NCCM posted.

The council proceeded to publish six more posts with screenshots of Ghamari’s previous remarks about the conflict.

“MPP Ghamari has unfortunately recycled some of the worst Islamophobic fear-mongering, including saying how “Allahu akbar,” a phrase uttered by Muslims during every prayer, is an unsafe threat when said by Muslims,” NCCM wrote.

Ghamari responded by questioning why it appeared that the third post was deleted by the council.

“That post accused me of being Islamophobic because I pointed out that the only Middle Eastern country who condemned the murder of Iranians by the terrorist Islamic Regime in Iran was Israel. I see you, NCCM,” Ghabari posted.

However, the NCCM responded with a link to the third post, showing it wasn’t deleted.

In the council’s last post in the thread, the NCCM called on Ontario Premier Doug Ford to take action.

“Enough is enough. Our leaders are supposed to be fighting Islamophobia, not spreading divisive messaging. We ask Premier Ford @fordnation to take swift action if MPP @ggharmari still refuses to apologize and retract,” NCCM said.

Now Toronto reached out to both Ghamari and Ford’s offices but did not receive a response in time of publication.

In 2018, Ghamari was voted in as Carleton’s first Member of Provincial Parliament. The Iranian-Canadian is also an experienced international trade lawyer and commercial litigator.
