National Post dumps Dave Bidini’s column

The National Post has said goodbye to Dave Bidini. The musician, sports fan and author of 12 books was recently told that his weekly Saturday column was no longer needed.

Bidini turned down an interview with NOW but according to his Facebook post, the paper thought his offerings were “hit and miss.”

But he’s determined not to let the news get to him: “I don’t need that doubt in my art not now. anyhow, the last few years have been awful there with new people mostly at the top and it’s probably a relief.”

He’d be wise not to take it personally, and to see it more as a reflection of the ailing Post’s financial troubles than of his own skills. Dropping columnists the one thing that can compete with the noisy blogosphere is a sign of desperation.

Bidini warns that this isn’t the last we’ll hear from him on this latest turn of events.

“Anyhow, will tell the whole sordid saga in my next book, which is partly about newspapers (and the North) anyway,” he writes.

We reached out to National Post editor-in-chief Anne Marie Owens for comment but haven’t yet heard back. We’ll update when/if we do.
