Ask anybody at City Hall and they’ll tell you that Pam McConnell is one the most progressive councillors around.

But that hasn’t stopped a tiny group of socialists from targeting her for defeat in the November election. Instead of trying to knock off a right-winger (e.g., Norm Gardner or Case Ootes), a group calling itself the Socialist Alternative is backing Wendy Forrest, president of OPSEU Local 512, against McConnell in Toronto Centre Rosedale.

Apparently, McConnell isn’t left enough for them.

“We would say she’s a right-wing city councillor,” says Jason Baines, Forrest’s campaign manager.

We’re talking Pam McConnell here, right?

Yup. Baines says McConnell has voted to drive out low-income tenants and close shelters.

McConnell’s executive assistant, Sean Meagher, thinks this is laughable given her record pushing the tenant defence fund and affordable housing.

Forrest took just 2 per cent of the vote in Don River in the last election.
