Album reviews Music

>>> Nick Ferrio

Like Night Garden, which kicked off Peterborough songwriter Nick Ferrio’s debut album, Among The Coyotes And Birdsongs evokes a mellow midsummer nighttime garden party with friends. Produced by Wooden Sky’s Gavin Gardiner, its folk and country tunes move through the trajectory of love as it comes and passes through to its strangers-on-the-street aftermath.

Ferrio eases off on the country music influences, though they’re still present in the instrumentation (Matt Monoogian’s pedal steel especially). He approaches the genre most successfully in his songwriting and instrumentals rather than twangy vocal delivery. He’s an old-school crooner, conveying warmth through simple lines.

The backup vocalists will be familiar to many: the Weather Station’s Tamara Lindeman, Evening Hymns’ Jonas Bonnetta and Sylvie Smith. Julie Doiron joins in on traditional English folk song Hang Man and sweet standout Mirrorball Shine. A special shout-out to drummer Ian Kehoe (Attack in Black, Marine Dreams), whose understated percussion augments some of the best tracks.

Nick Ferrio plays Burdock on Friday (June 5).
