When Nine Inch Nails played one of their last Wave Goodbye shows at Toronto’s final Virgin festival in 2009, they left shards of broken guitar and hurled microphone stands in their wake. It’ll likely be a more placid version of NIN returning to the city in October, but their newfound focus on dazzling visual effects and inventive staging should still make it a powerful performance. Inspired by the Talking Heads’ famed Stop Making Sense tour, Trent Reznor and his artistic director, Rob Sheridan, are working on a spectacle worthy of its big-budget arena setting.
