Norman Yeung

Rating: NNNNN

WHO: Norman Yeung, writer, actor, filmmaker, visual artist – currently working at the National Film Board of Canada

WHERE: Queen West alley near Bathurst

WHEN: Thursday evening

CLOTHES: “The jacket is from Circa Forty (456 Queen West, 416-504-0880) and cost $20. It was an impulse buy. I got my Le Tigre T-shirt at their show in 2002, where it was probably $15. An old girlfriend gave me my belt from Annie Thompson (674 Queen West, 416-703-3843). My André Michel jeans are from the Underground (now closed), a vintage store I used to work at on Yonge. They were a couple of bucks. The leather bag is from a luggage store in Pearson Airport and cost $200, a gift to myself when I moved to Toronto. My Rieker boots are from a mom ‘n’ pop shop called William’s Shoe Store (750 Queen West, 416-504-4898) and were around $200. I’m not into expensive clothes, by the way. This handkerchief is from Honest Ed’s (581 Bloor West, 416-537-1574) and cost me almost nothing. My fob chain is from somewhere in Vancouver. My dear friend Sarah in Vancouver gave me my simple silver ring. And my beloved bracelet is from Lines, a vintage store in, yes, Vancouver and, no, you can’t have it.”

MY STYLE: “Is he gay?”

HAIR: “I cut my own hair with two mirrors and deft hands.”

INTO: “NFB filmmakers Arthur Lipsett and Norman McLaren sitting on my stoop with Gareth C. Scales and crafting leftist slogans Pu-Erh, a play that I wrote and I’m acting in at SummerWorks Theatre Festival (August 4-14) at Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace. We’ll also stage a reading July 23 at Harbourfront Centre during the Dim Sum Festival, directed by Nina Aquino. I’ll be acting in Betty Quan’s Mother Tongue at Dim Sum and painting at Style In Progress at Dundas Square (Saturday, July 16).”
