If the cataclysmic events in Fukushima, Japan can teach us anything about our reliance on nuclear power, it’s that no nuke system is failsafe.
Our reactors may not be located in an earthquake zone and threatening tsunamis aren’t expected to come whipping off the Great Lakes anytime soon, but there is also a tendency within the nuke industry to think we’re better prepared than we really are for potential disasters.
At a minimum, nuke activists say, the events in Japan call for a safety review of reactors here.
That means already costly nuclear plants are going to become more expensive. Is our continued investment in nuclear power worth the risks?
