Photographer Andrew MacNaughtan dies

Celebrated Toronto photographer and NOW contributor Andrew MacNaughtan was found dead in Los Angeles on Wednesday where he was shooting photos of the band Rush. He was found in his hotel room.

The band posted this message to their website on Thursday:

We’re deeply shocked and heartbroken to learn of the sudden passing of our close friend and long-time photographer, Andrew MacNaughtan. He was a sweet person and a very talented artist. Words cannot describe how much he will be missed. – Geddy, Alex & Neil

The photographer, whose photos were crisp and dynamic, shot many of Rush’s album covers and promo shots over several decades.

He worked with many other Canadian icons – from Peter Mansbridge to Margaret Atwood to the Trailer Park Boys – as well as directing videos and producing commercial work.

His website has been closed since his death was announced.

MacNaughtan photographed two NOW magazine covers, one profile of Rush, in July 11, 2002 (seen below) and another cover story on the Kids In The Hall in January 20, 2000.

An autopsy is pending.
