PRENUP PUB 191 College, 416-506-4040, prenuppub.com

Six-month-old Prenup has the same laid-back, pubbish feel as other neighbourhood bars under the same ownership (Sin & Redemption, the Town Crier, Village Idiot).

Unless you’re a thirsty U of T student, location isn’t Prenup’s selling point. I wouldn’t say its name is particularly appealing either. (I believe my actual reaction was “What the fuck?”) Once you’re past the unremarkable threshold, clunky wood panels and gaudy touches may only increase your doubts.

But I think we can all agree not to judge a beer joint by its cover it’s what’s in the kegs and fridges that counts. And if you want beer – especially of European origin – this is an awesome place to drink.

There are some local beers, but don’t come expecting all Ontario craft (unless, of course, you’re a grumpy Yelper or ferocious locavore looking for something to gripe about). Though 70 taps run the international gamut from North America to the UK, Belgian beer is Prenup’s thing.

There are 20 Belgian brews (give or take) like De Koninck ($5.95), Mort Subite Kriek ($5.95) and Houblon Chouffe ($6.95) on tap, but if you really want to dig into the weird and wonderful realm of Old World beer styles, thumb past the draught options to the bottles. This is where to find Abbeys, brunes and sours – oh, my! Best of all, delicious (and often hard-to-find) beers like Alvinne Sigma ($8), St. Feuillien Grand Cru ($8.50), Timmerman’s Oude Gueuze ($8) and Westvleteren 12 ($22) aren’t gouged to the max.

The fact that Prenup pulls off two storeys without a single TV is a classy plus. Did I mention that there’s a pretty sweet front patio? Sure, it snowed last week, but put that info in your pocket for the next sunny day. Here’s hoping Belgian Beer Day Worldwide (Saturday, April 4) is a scorcher.

Access Steps at the entrance, washrooms on the second floor.

Hours 11 to 2 am daily (as a pub should be).
