Prism Prize

Despite the fact that neither MuchMusic nor MTV actually plays many music videos any more, people are still watching the things (as with everything else, mainly on the internet). For emerging independent artists, a clever clip can be a shortcut to a much wider audience.

On Sunday night, the inaugural Prism Prize recognized Halifax synth-pop performer Rich Aucoin‘s Brian Wilson Is A.L.I.V.E. as the best Canadian music video of 2012. Aucoin beat out favourites like Grimes (who had two videos short-listed), Drake and Arcade Fire. Aucoin and director Noah Pink were awarded $5,000 for their efforts, which will buy a lot of confetti for Aucoin’s live show.

NXNE second wave

The 2013 edition of North By Northeast announced its second wave of bands for the festival, and we’re starting to get genuinely excited.

Added to the lineup this week are hip-hop heavyweight Big Boi, country punk veterans Social Distortion, Toronto hardcore heroes Fucked Up, Montreal piano pop sensation Coeur de Pirate, Brooklyn rappers Smif-N-Wessun, California synth punk band the Soft Moon and many more.

The festival runs June 10 to 16, and you can already pick up wristbands and tickets at nxne.com.
