Excuse me? Did PE really just call their new album-slash-DVD New Whirl Odor? As we learn in the making-of footage that accompanies their 10th LP, the title was lifted from a Dr. Dre interview that Chuck D read years ago, in which Dre (jokingly?) announced that the bad pun would be the title of his next record. So, after waiting years for Dre to release something with that title, Chuck D finally did it himself. With this in mind, we ask: in the face of rap’s rampant popularity and the subtlety of modern racism, could Public Enemy be suffering from a crippling lack of direction/inspiration? Watch the DVD that goes with their so-so new album – documentaries on the making of Odor (tedious unless you’re dying to know what production software Professor Griff uses) and their 03 tour, plus some embarrassing new music videos, including Flavor Flav solo shot The Hot 1 – and you’ll be left with a resounding answer of “Yes, yes, y’all.” And they won’t quit.
