The late Canadian composer known as “the millennium Noel Coward” is the subject of a tribute concert on Monday (November 30) at the Performing Arts Lodge (110 the Esplanade).
Cardiff-born, formerly Toronto-based Ray Jessel, who died last year at 85, composed classic works and love songs for Louis Armstrong as well as material for Broadway musical Baker Street, singer/songwriter John Denver and TV shows like The Bob Newhart Show, The Love Boat and The Carol Burnett Show. Before heading to Broadway, he worked freelance for CBC penning songs and the hour-long musical Look Ma, I’m Human, as well as writing for annual Toronto revue Spring Thaw.
The tribute concert lineup includes Jazz FM’s Jaymz Bee, Ori Dagan, Sam Broverman, Morry Kernerman, Robert Missen, Allison Arends and David Warrack. Suggested donation is $20 to benefit PAL Future. 416-603-0625.
