Rock Plaza Central

Rating: NNNN

Heavy on the brass, violins and experimental instrumentation and laden with bittersweet melancholic melodic lines, the tracks on this concept album – Rock Plaza Central’s third disc – tell the tale of robotic horses created by humans to aid us in a conflict against (evil) angels. Often compared to Will Oldham and Neutral Milk Hotel, RPC, with their layered, large-scale arrangements, deliver the grandiosity of prog rock’s orchestral sweep while maintaining the rustic jangle of folk, creating a genre that requires a new moniker. Kind of like David Gilmour meets Bob Dylan. Add Eaton’s endearing yet almost desperate nasal yowl and you have an album that is likeable and accessible yet wildly obtuse.

Rock Plaza Central shake up the Horseshoe Saturday (November 4).
