Sahara

Rating: NNNNN

Up till now, Hollywood has ignored Clive Cussler’s novels, which is odd because they’re guy-centred actioners featuring far-flung locales. Imagine a Man’s Own Adventure series.

Now comes Sahara, starring bland Matthew McConaughey as Dirk Pitt. After finding a rare coin, he embarks on a treasure hunt through the West African desert, accompanied by sidekick Steve Zahn and beautiful doctor Penélope Cruz.

Hugh Jackman was originally skedded for the role, and he could have kickstarted a solid franchise. (There are more
than a dozen Pitt books out.) Let’s see how McConaughey and Cruz – they’re dating, don’t ya know? – sizzle in the sun.

Opens Friday (April 8). For venues and times, see Movies, page 103. Screened after press time. See review April 7 at www.nowtoronto.com/film.
