Sandra Bullock locks lips, again

Are we sick of Sandra Bullock’s on-stage girl-on-girl action yet?

I know we’re not supposed to take the MTV awards too seriously – they’re popularity contests, for sure, and the entire event is skewed to the age 12 to 25 set. But that’s exactly why no one in that audience is going to grasp Bullock’s ironic concept.

Bullock won the Generation Award for her career work in movies and she definitely deserves it, even though MTV obviously gave her the prize because she’d been betrayed by hubby Jesse James and the televised awards show represented the first time Bullock would appear publicly since the scandal. There was no way she was getting up on that podium without commenting on her personal travails, which she did, to amusing effect.

But, in what was plainly a scripted moment, she looked back at award presenter Scarlett Johnansson and asked, “What are you still doing here,” and Johansson made a comment, some variation on, “You’re hot,” as a little foreplay to what was soon to become full on liplock between the two.

The kiss was an ironic reference to the famous – and much YouTubed – smackeroo Bullock laid on Meryl Streep after they shared the best actress Critic’s Choice award and I do get the attraction. Who doesn’t want to kiss Scarlet Johansson (or, from my point of view, Meryl Streep, for that matter)?

But the young viewers at the MTV movie awards clearly didn’t grasp the irony, or the reference to the Streep smooch. You could hear mostly young male voices, yelping and howling their encouragement to Bullock to give them some lesbo action.

I thought the Streep encounter was pretty funny – and it was absolutely not pre-planned, almost as if Bullock really couldn’t resist – but I found the MTV moment to be beneath her. It’s also a little bit insulting to real-life lesbians who live their lives in authentic ways and not as a spectacle for male viewers.

Then again Ms. Bullock, if all this is an extended prelude to your coming out, bring it on.[rssbreak]
