Scott Pilgrim didn’t fall far from the Plumtree

What’s the connection between NOW and Scott Pilgrim Versus the World, the Hollywood movie currently shooting in Toronto?

[rssbreak]

It starts back in the 90s, when NOW music writer Carla Gillis sang in an East coast all-girl indie pop band called Plumtree.

In 1997, Plumtree recorded a song called Scott Pilgrim for their second studio album, Predicts The Future.

Bryan Lee O’Malley was a big fan of the band, and borrowed the song title for his popular graphic novel series, which is set in Toronto. Fast forward a few years, we find Universal Pictures has decided to turn the first part of the series into a major motion picture, contracting Edgar Wright (Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz) to direct it, and stars none other than lovable super-geek Michael Cera.

Good news for fans of the comic, and great news for Carla, who’s been working on a Plumtree memoir (which obviously stands a much better chance of being published after the movie) and now might some of her old songs licensed to the film.

When it makes it to the screen, keep an eye out for subtle references to the band, as the filmmakers have been tracking down old tour shirts to use in the film.

In the meantime, try not to be too creepy when stalking Michael Cera while he’s in town (I know, it’s tempting), go see Carla’s current band Sister next time they play in town, and listen to her interviewed about Plumtree and Scott Pilgrim on CBC Radio 3.
