>>> She-Devils

In our recent cover story with Grimes, the musician named Montreal’s She-Devils, composed of Audrey Ann and Kyle Jukka, as an act to keep our eye on. Sure enough, they’re now on tour opening for Majical Cloudz, and with that comes their first recorded offering.

The self-titled EP evokes a weirder, dreamier Best Coast, but refreshingly free of electric guitars, fuzz pedals and warpy surf tones. Okay, I suppose it’s just Ann’s vocals, especially on second song Where There’s No One, doing the Best Coast-evoking. Jukka, meanwhile, adds elegantly drifting vinyl-based samples and synth collages reminiscent of Boards of Canada.

Come sets the soft but transfixing tone, while Where There’s No One adds touches of yearning and noisier bits that Jukka’s careful to keep in the background. Only four songs long, the EP is merely a beguiling sampler. Head to the Garrison on Friday for a fuller dose.

Top track: Come

She-Devils open for Majical Cloudz at the Garrison on Friday (January 15).
