Judgment day

A top-secret group of Toronto fashion media and buyers are meeting today (Thursday, January 10) at the Fashion Design Council of Canada’s Liberty Village headquarters to deliver their runway-ready verdicts on designer submissions for March’s Fashion Week (www.lorealfashionweek.ca). The runway schedule will be announced in February, but FDCC head Robin Kay has already confirmed that Fashion Week will return to Nathan Phillips Square from March 17 to 22. And in the tradition of Kay’s punny slogans, the fall shows will be branded Wear In The World.

White out

Windfall Clothing Service, which distributes new clothing to social agencies around Toronto, has enlisted a boldface list of pro scenesters for its Wear White 4 Windfall fundraising campaign. Citytv’s Anne Mroczkowski and Dina Pugliese, Bustle designer Shawn Hewson, new CBC talk show hosts Steven Sabados and Chris Hyndman and Post gossip guy Shinan Govani star in a stark Do Right In White poster campaign going up around town in time for the January 31 event. For info on how to get involved, log on to www.ww4w.ca.

Back to school

Artist, illustrator and designer-toy creator Derrick Hodgson teaches a one-day workshop called Creating Creature Culture on Saturday (January 12) at the Rich Media Institute (156 Augusta, 416-840-1010, www.richmediainstitute.com). The day-long course starts with a tutorial on Hodgson’s work with the Hoboyard Toy Collective (www.hoboyard.com) and his own MDRL line (www.madreal.com). Later, students have a chance to translate their own illustrations into 3-D figures. The course costs $79. Call the institute to register.

Style update

The slight name change to our weekly Style Notes column isn’t the only new fashion and design feature we’re rolling out for 2008. To coincide with the launch of NOW’s spiffy new nowtoronto.com site, we’re debuting our Style Sticks And Stones weekly blog today with a chat about the Toronto retail experience. The column will go live every Thursday and also include bonus Sweet Deal tips that miss out on our print deadline.
