Super Furry Animals

Rating: NNNN

Anyone who’s seen a graphically creative sleeve of a Super Furry Animals recording or experienced one of their multimedia performances will already be aware that visuals are very important to the mad Welshmen. That carries through to their typically imaginative video clips. Many are a little too unconventional to fit in with MuchMusic’s lifestyle programming, so it’s likely that few people over here have ever seen them. That’s why this video retrospective DVD, a companion to the Furries’ recent Songbook singles comp, is such a welcome release.

Don’t count on lots of multiple-camera shots of dudes rocking out onstage – you’re more likely to see how curling rocks are manufactured. If Gruff Rhys and the lads make a cameo appearance at all, they’re more likely to be surfing with cartoon camels, cavorting with one-eyed aliens or jumping around in Yeti suits. There’s loads of hairy kicks. As a bonus, they’ve tacked on a Dylan Jones North American tour documentary that inadvertently shows the boring reality of being on the road. You know they’re in trouble when the focus shifts to the hired merch salesman who just wants to share the thrill of discovering fake teeth.
