Sushi

Sado, 1116 Eglinton West, at Old Park, 416-783-8111

If Japanese food plays to the eye as much as to the taste buds, then Sado Sushi will have your peepers popping out of their sockets.

Far from traditional, the kaleidoscopic takes on maki produced by this Vietnamese-owned place are as jaw-droppingly gorgeous as they are a treat to eat. Overstuffed with seared tuna, shrimp tempura and avocado, the Geisha comes wrapped in green bean-curd sheet and straddles a pool of ponzu criss-crossed with creamy chili miso. Splendidly marbled sheets of salmon sashimi dressed with threads of deep-fried sweet potato resemble starfish, while grilled lobster rolls come spectacularly plated with the crustacean’s upright tail. And radicchio.

“People like to try new things,” says Sado’s owner/chef Sonny Nguyen, who’s been known to put blue cheese in his maki. “I come up with these crazy ideas, and sometimes they work.”
