Things have gotten ugly between the Federation of Associations of Canadian Tamils (FACT) and the National Post.
After unsuccessful attempts to obtain an apology, FACT has decided to sue the Post for a series of articles the group says wrongly painted the organization as a terrorist front for Tamil Tigers fighting for a separate homeland in Sri Lanka.
FACT says, in a statement of claim asking for $13 million in damages, that the Post has “irreparably harmed” its international reputation.
The group has hired legal eagle Clay Ruby to make its case.
Post deputy editor Martin Newland says the paper has offered to meet with the community, but they have refused.
Suggestions that the articles are racially motivated are “ridiculous,” says Newland, who adds that the Post “refuses to be bullied. There’s a national security issue here.”
