Two tracks into this remix-cum-mash-up of old Beatles music, it seems like George Martin and his son Giles are gonna show Danger Mouse how it’s done. Alas, Love doesn’t sustain the breathtaking beauty of Because or the kick-ass mix in Get Back. The few times the two pull off a bona fide mash-up, as at the end ofCome Together, it’s terrific, and when the disc feels like a mix tape with smooth segues, it’s big fun. Remember that Love was designed as the soundtrack for the current Cirque de Soleil show in Vegas, so it benefits from Mr. Kite – you won’t believe where that song goes – and the circus-like ditties inspired by that unique track, and relies on George Harrison’s sitar sounds to facilitate Cirque’s sinuous movement. Love may not be a full-on revolutionary take on the Beatles catalogue, but it does bring back some of the most awesome material ever to come out of a recording studio.
