THE BLOW

THE BLOW The Concussive Caress, Or, Casey Caught Her Mom Singing Along With The Vacuum (K Records) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN

The Concussive Caress sounds like the type of album Michelle McAdorey would be making if she’d fallen in love with Spike Jonze films and recorded a follow-up to Crash Vegas’s near-perfect Aurora disc. This fascinating album by McAdorey-sounding K Records darling Khaela Maricich vivisects sweet lo-fi indie rock anthems into their pulsating heartbeats and still-breathing lungs, turning soft guitar chords and low-tech electronic effects inside out like discarded sweaters worn threadbare from too much love. Maricich calls these tunes children’s rhymes for adults, and you can see why, cuz they bristle with wonderfully naive passion. Her singing is anti-aggressive but so confrontational it makes you gasp, whether oozing raw lust on the Cat Powerish blues of the twin girly mix tape love tracks Come On Pauline and Gravity (Pauline’s Response To Amy), or stark wistfulness on killer closer The Warriors’ Hearts. The Blow plays the indie rock bonanza with her K Records comrades at the Blue Moon Friday (November 7).
