The Cure

Rating: NNNN

The Cure are looking a little morbid and precious these days. Not that they weren’t always morbid and precious (OK, they’re the granddaddies of morbid and precious), but in this DVD of two nights live in Berlin they look like relics of a bygone era, specifically the 80s. While there’s a certain creepiness to it, I’m thankful they’ve stayed the course, because the tunes they’re playing here from Pornography and Disintegration still manage to strike a chord. There’s also a whole bunch of stuff from 2000’s Bloodflowers, and according to Robert Smith, these three albums are “inextricably linked in so many ways,” which you’ll find out about in the very serious interview segment that comes as a bonus. Interesting, sure, but what I really want to know is who does Smith’s hair? Has he had the same stylist for the past 20 years, or does he have to take a photo of himself into a new salon every few months? In any case, there are great tunes here, including Fascination Street, Love Song, Pictures Of You, If Only Tonight We Could Sleep and Lullaby. Damn, those tunes just get me in my gut. A must-have for long-time Cure fans. The Cure’s Curiosa tour rolls into the Molson Amphitheatre Monday (August 9).
