It’s never easy finding holiday music the folks won’t complain about but you can still stomach. This recently reissued Staple Singers set of reworked traditionals and evergreen faves they recorded for Riverside back in July 1962 seems like it could fit nicely into that middle ground for many families. Their choices include a number of less familiar public domain numbers and two fine originals by Pops Staples, but even the well-worn standards are a pleasure to hear when sung by the great Mavis Staples accompanied by Pops’s wonderfully trembling guitar vibrato.
