TOM GREEN

Rating: N

Getting turfed by Drew Barrymore had to be troubling for zany Canuck comic Tom Green, but whether his attempts at reliving his youth by rapping and skateboarding are symptomatic of a greater midlife crisis is best left up to his shrink. It doesn’t sound like he’s spent much time developing his microphone technique in the 13 years since his days rapping goofy shit with Ottawa’s Organized Rhyme as MC Bones. Much of the stuff on Prepare For Impact is even more embarrassingly juvenile than his Check The O.R. foolishness, but not quite lame enough to be actually funny. Why the Dust Brothers’ Mike Simpson – who provides beats, scratching and programming under the alias EZ Mike, for obvious reasons – got involved is just as mystifying as Ivan Berry signing on as executive producer. Perhaps it’s Green’s payback for losing the best-rap-recording Juno to Devon’s Keep It Slammin’ back in 93. Prepare For Impact comes packaged with a boring DVD documenting Green’s promo swing by school bus through Ontario – a new career low point.
