Many bands find it easy to coast on past achievements. While Tool have plenty of fans convinced of their musical infallibility, five years after their last prog-riddled opus the band hasn’t come up with anything new. 10,000 Days sounds messy and poorly paced marathon songs last more than 11 minutes without achieving anything besides length and, occasionally, heaviness. It’s disappointing to hear a band as lauded as Tool stand on the razor’s edge between progressive/challenging and pointless. Great packaging, though. Tool play the Hummingbird Centre Tuesday (May 16).
