Track & Field

TRACK & FIELD 860 College, trackandfieldbar.com

If you spent your junior high weekends watching idiot comedy like I did, you may recall Steve and Doug Butabi’s “genius” inside/outside club concept from A Night At The Roxbury. Track & Field, the new venture from Dustin Keating (Montauk), Joshua LeBlanc (Montauk’s former manager) and Nickie Minshall (a former publicist), is the toned down Canadian version of that – but with indoor “outdoor” games, zero douche quotient and minimal ass-grabbing.

The inside is furnished with picnic tables, astroturf and a swinging loveseat – as if a summer camp set up shop in a sprawling rec room built for 150-plus. Bocce and shuffleboard courts (two of each) can be reserved via Track & Field’s website, but spontaneous gamers will be happy to note that one of each is designated for walk-ins. There’s also crokinole for those with no interest in exertion. Games are free of charge, and if you just want to dance, there are DJs on weekends and Mondays (aka industry night).

A glance at the list of refreshments reaffirms that this is a house of fun and games. Cocktails like the Quiet American (bourbon, Amaro Nonino, absinthe, maraschino, Peychaud’s and Angostura bitters) or I Know The Owner (rye, sweet vermouth, Fernet Branca, cola and mole bitters, both $12) by bar manager Jesse Borg (Home of the Brave) can elicit giggles from even the grumpiest customer. Negronis and Tame Impalas (tequila, lime, cucumber, chai-tea syrup and ginger beer, a house favourite from Montauk) are on tap for $9.

There’s also cold beer to knock back with a selection of small bar snacks or the most popular food option, Domino’s Pizza (because greasy carbs and geriatric recreation are an unprecedented coupling) delivered courtside. Pizza slices only take up one hand, leaving a full set of digits for launching balls or shuffling cues perfect food for moderately competitive recreation.

Recently, alpha divas at a perverted bachelorette party who have obviously watched Superbad too many times scrawled veiny penises on the back of every single menu. Instead of fuming over this dickish vandalism, Team T&F is considering keeping them.

Ultimately, this is a lawn games bar in a basement. If Track & Field took itself too seriously, no one would be able to keep a straight face anyway.

Hours Daily 5 pm to 2 am.

Access Steps down at the entrance, washrooms on same level as bar.
