Vince Vaughns Wild West Comedy Show

VINCE VAUGHNS WILD WEST COMEDY SHOW Directed by Ari Sandel. 115 minutes. Opens Friday (February 8). Rating: NNN

This often funny, occasionally touching standup-comedy-cum-travelling-roadshow doc is saddled with an ungainly title that ultimately promises more than the film can deliver.

Specifically, if you stick Hollywood frat boy Vince Vaughn and four foul-mouthed alpha male comics hungry for fame and fortune on a tour bus for 30 days, youd expect things to be a whole lot wilder than this.

Ahmed Ahmed, John Caparulo, Bret Ernst and Sebastian Maniscalco all have distinctive styles that add up to a nice balance and a lot of laughs Caparulos cranky hick shtick steals many a show.

But theres surprisingly little creative tension behind the scenes. In fact, it takes a lame practical joke played on Vaughns producer pal Peter Billingsley (yes, A Christmas Storys Ralphie all growed up) to get a rise out of anybody.

Which is too bad, because jokes aside, the backstage scenes are also the most insightful.
