“WEIRD AL” YANKOVIC

Rating: NNNN

Weird Al was in the middle of his 2004 tour when news came that both his parents had died of carbon monoxide poisoning. But he didn’t cancel any shows, writing on his website that performing was the best possible therapy. Maybe writing and producing this disc (which comes with a DVD of animated videos for all the original songs) was more creative consolation. Staight Outta Lynwood is the parody grand wizard’s most hysterical record since Bad Hair Day, possibly even Alapalooza. That might be clear to those who’ve had their minds blown by Yankovic’s Houston double-time über-geek boasts about editing Wikipedia and being ‘whiter than sour cream’ on his incredible Chamillionaire parody, White & Nerdy. His finger’s closer to the pop pulse than ever: he adds an appendix of awkward admissions to Usher’s Confessions II, outdoes R. Kelly’s seemingly unspoofable Trapped In The Closet operetta and puts everyone from 50 Cent to Modest Mouse through the spin cycle on a peak polka medley.
