Wendy Banks’s Top 10 Canadians to look out for

Rating: NNNNN

The results of a year’s digging around in the entrails of Canadian cinema augur future glory for the following filmmakers.

1,2 Jeff Stephenson and Jason Tan Flyerman This student documentary was startlingly moving, thanks to the subject’s exceptional candour and Stephenson’s and Tan’s editing skills. There’s been talk of a dramatic feature in Stephenson’s future. Intriguing.

3 Nettie Wild Fix: The Story Of An Addicted City OK, director Wild’s not new, but she’s brilliant, and Fix’s massive narrative impact points a viable and sorely needed way forward for activist documentary filmmaking.

4 Mike Johnson My Student Loan Hockey-loving, poobah-baiting doc maker Johnson has a pleasingly populist sensibility and tons of ideas.

5 Andrea Dorfman Love That Boy Parsley Days Dorfman could open a charm school and make a mint. Or she could keep directing movies, which would be better.

6 Nadia Litz Love That Boy Sooo purty, in that funny-lookin’, Jackie-O kind of way. And she can act, too.

7 Anita Doron Not A Fish Story As she proved in this short, the writer/director’s so smart, so kind, so subtle. So when are we going to get a feature film?

8 Benjamin Nemerofsky-Ramsay I Am A Boyband Last year’s celebrated art fag is this year’s multiple-personality singing sensation. What will he think of next?

9 Dale Heslip The Truth About Head Sweet and whimsical, which will only get you so far in this world. But if this writer/director learns to indulge his inner John Waters a smidge, watch out.

10 Stefan Berrill and Jordan Norn Can I Borrow A Feeling? OK, maybe one minute of video isn’t really enough to go on, but these guys managed to cram a complete romance, from first glance to broken heart, into their entry in the One Minute Film Festival. It was fun like a microwave Run Lola Run. Can’t wait to see what they’d do with five minutes. ****
