The wall-sized artist’s version next to the Scotiabank at Broadview and Gerrard (inset) is a little more how we imagined the Zhong Hua Men Archway rising over East Chinatown – spectacularly high above the busy streetscape. Instead, Toronto’s first traditional Chinese gateway is taking centre stage in a city-owned parking lot facing the Don Jail. Officially, the grand vision for the project got crossed up by the streetcar lines on Gerrard, not money – council has so far anted up a cool half-mil, half the cost. The bad news: $150,000 is still needed to complete the project. The good: fundraising seems to be on track.
