SUMMARY:Of Whales and Willpower: The Jamaican Jonah
DESCRIPTION:West Indian & Jamaican classical music for organ\, including excerpts of Samuel Felsted’s Jonah (1775): the first oratorio written in Jamaica. \nThis concert is a journey through works for organ by composers of Jamaican and West Indian heritage; spanning from the Baroque Era to the present day. \nA rising star in Toronto’s organ scene\, emerging Jamaican-Canadian organist Joshua Duncan-Lee will premiere works by Jamaica’s first classical composer\, Samuel Felsted\, including excerpts of his work\, Jonah. \nWritten in 1775\, Samuel Felsted’s Jonah is the first oratorio written in the Western Hemisphere by Jamaica’s first classical composer. Handelian in its nature\, it is a true treat for the ears. \nThis program of organ music places Felsted’s music alongside works by later composers connected to Jamaica and the diaspora\, including Noel Da Costa\, and Craig Alistair Bloomfield\, as well as Torontonians Rashaan Rori Allwood & Ted Runcie. \nGuadeloupe-born\, Afro-French composer Joseph Bologne\, Chevalier de Saint-Georges appears in the program with an excerpt from his opera L’Amant Anonyme\, the first surviving opera written by a composer born in the West Indies. \nThis concert is part of an ongoing project to raise the requisite funds and support to mount the Canadian Premiere of Samuel Felsted’s Jonah with full orchestral accompaniment. \nPerformers include:Joshua Duncan-Lee\, organPaul Williamson\, tenorAlexander Cappellazzo\, tenor

Vita Bella Entertainment is bringing The Confidential Musical Theatre Project back to Toronto after 7 years. The Confidential Musical Theatre Project is a concept created by Marion Abbott in July 2014. The first musical ever presented this way was Sunday In The Park With George. The sold out audience gave it two standing ovations and it received a rave review. \nThe Confidential Musical Theatre Project went on to thrill audiences and artists in Los Angeles\, Ottawa\, Montreal\, Cape Breton\, New York\, Pittsburg\, Pickering\, Kitchener\, Halifax\, Vancouver\, Chicago and other cities. It is estimated that over 1500 artists have kept the secret and both amateur and Broadway pros have accepted this unique performing challenge. \nHow it works: The cast is sworn to secrecy about their role and the title of the show they’re performing. There are no rehearsals. The cast prepare on their own with notes from the Director and Music Director. The cast arrives one hour before performance time and meet each other for the first time.
