SUMMARY:Cicada Woods live at DROM Taberna
DESCRIPTION:Cicada Woods is a new kind of string quartet pushing the boundaries of the strings sonic universe. It was born when dear musical friends Suhashini Arulanandam (violin)\, Esme Allen-Creighton (viola)\, Sybil Shanahan (cello) and Shannon Wojewoda (double bass) spent three magical days by Pine Lake exploring how their instruments could mimic and expand upon the traditional sound world of Argentinian Tango including the bandoneon\, piano and guitar.  Following this tradition\, each instrument is a soloist and virtuoso as well as ensemble musician.  Cicada Woods also use their virtuosity to maintain the rich texture of traditional tango ensembles\, arranging parts where instruments frequently carry multiple lines and harmonies. Their name was inspired by the tango ‘chicharra’ (Cicada) string technique where the bow scratches along the string windings as well as the forest setting where they made their first arrangements–four wooden instruments reborn from the gestation of classical and tango roots.

Iconoclastic Toronto drummer Dave Clark (Rheostatics\, Charles Spearin\, Dinner is Ruined\, Gord Downie…) created The Woodshed Orchestra with passionate\, courageous and joyful friends to play the music from his original songbook. Clark leads the band “Levon Helm-style” from the drumkit\, singing and sharing the lead vocal duties with members of the band. The band is a powerhouse that can improvise and turn tunes around on a dime to create unique frenzied moments that leave audiences awestruck and excited. The Woodshed Orchestra can play out as an electric band with drums\, guitars\, horns\, keyboards and vocals and just as easily break out into a New Orleans-type 2nd Line brass band on parade. They plays with all the love that they have in their hearts every time they take the stage. It’s a beautiful thing.

DESCRIPTION:The Waleed Kush Afro-Jazz Ensemble combines the impelling ancient rhythms of Africa with exhilarating\, modern jazz improvisations. From Nubia\, Sudan\, to Harlem and Toronto. \nTheir rhythms are played in what is considered “odd time” in Western music\, combining jazz chord progressions with traditional African rhythms to produce an entrancing experience. \nWaleed tells stories atop an imaginative musical landscape\, inspired by the chanting and vocal phrasing which have accompanied these rhythms since ancient times. Each composition narrates an experience or journey\, continually changing depending on what story the musicians want to tell. Sometimes these experiences are personal\, sometimes they are historical\, sometimes they are a retelling of the past of the Nile and Nubian pyramids. Each musical journey creates a relationship between the storyteller (the band) and the audience. Waleed sings in over 15 African and Western languages\, celebrating the African diaspora in Canada. As the band leader\, Waleed has received numerous awards for different solo and group projects\, being awarded and nominated for several Juno and Grammy awards.
