DESCRIPTION:Spring at the COC kicks off with the return of Bluebeard’s Castle/Erwartung\, a bold double-bill of one-act psychological thrillers from renowned director Robert Lepage. In Bartók’s Symbolist fairytale Bluebeard’s Castle\, the title character’s newest wife must unveil his gruesome secrets behind seven locked doors. This is complemented by Schoenberg’s Erwartung\, where a woman’s search for her missing lover starts a descent into madness. COC Music Director Johannes Debus guides renowned returning artists bass-baritone Christian Van Horn and soprano Karen Cargill through Bluebeard’s Castle\, and soprano Anna Gabler\, making her COC debut\, in Erwartung.

Renowned tenor Russell Thomas returns as the title character with Victoria Karkacheva making her COC debut as his love interest Charlotte. COC Music Director Johannes Debus leads the cast and COC Orchestra through Massenet’s sumptuous score\, which includes the famous stirring tenor aria “Pourquoi me réveiller.”

This sumptuous production is set in the demi-monde of glittering 1850s Paris\, evoking the social realities\, rhythms\, and debauchery of a rapidly changing society. \nMaking a series of COC debuts are: sopranos Kathryn Lewek and Lucia Cesaroni sharing the role of Violetta\, tenor Luke Norvell as Alfredo\, and baritone Reginald Smith\, Jr. as Giorgio. The roles of Alfredo and Giorgio will be shared by returning tenor Long Long and baritone Russell Braun.

DESCRIPTION:Richard Strauss’s tragicomic ode to the chaos in creating art\, Ariadne auf Naxos\, returns to the COC for the first time in 15 years in a production helmed by Paul Curran (2023’s Tosca). Acclaimed Metropolitan Opera regular soprano Rachel-Willis Sørensen makes her COC debut as the story’s soprano charged with the unusual task of singing both the haughty Prima Donna and the mythological figure of Ariadne in a single performance. She is joined by COC favourite baritone Russell Braun as the Music Master and tenor Clay Hilley as the Tenor/Bacchus. COC Music Director Johannes Debus leads the COC Orchestra through Strauss’ score rife with sparkling humour and emotional grandeur.

Based on Dimaline’s best-selling novel of the same name\, the opera blends Indigenous folklore and contemporary drama in its story of the tenacious Joan (2023 Ensemble Studio Competition First Prize-winning soprano Elisabeth St-Gelais) who discovers her missing husband leading a revival tent under a new identity as a reverend. COC Music Director Johannes Debus conducts the electric score\, giving voice to the opera’s Rogarou–a mythical Métis werewolf-like creature that stalks the human heart and forest alike. Empire of Wild is co-produced with the National Arts Centre’s National Creation Fund\, Orchestra and Indigenous Theatre.

The story sees shy and working class Nemorino desperate to win the hand of wealthy Adina\, even going so far as to buy a so-called “elixir of love” (really\, wine) from the smooth-talking salesman Dr. Dulcamara. Conductor Lorenzo Passerini returns following the COC’s 2024’s landmark production of Medea to lead tenor Duke Kim in his COC debut as Nemorino\, alongside COC Ensemble Studio graduate soprano Emily Rocha as Adina and COC favourite baritone Luca Pisaroni as Dr. Dulcamara. A crowd-pleaser for a reason\, Donizetti’s bubbly score features one of opera’s most famous arias\, “Una furtiva lagrima.”
