SUMMARY:Continuing retrospective of work by sculptor Floyd Kuptana
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to JP Albert for the generous loan of work that led to this retrospective of Floyd Kuptana’s career. \n– \nThe ongoing display of stone carvings throughout the gallery began as a memorial to master sculptor Floyd Kuptana after he passed away in May 2021. \n– \nIn 2022 the gallery staged a major exhibition of Kuptana’s paintings\, pastels and sculptures with the contribution of many pieces belonging to the artist’s longtime collaborator and friend\, Jean-Paul Albert. At the time curator deborah harris wrote: “It is still hard to imagine that [Floyd] is not here with us\, working\, laughing\, growling. We miss him.” \n– \nSince then many of the sculptures have remained on display in multiple rooms throughout the four-floor gallery building\, becoming part of the changing installations devised by harris. See below for a list of our individual spaces as well as our Eventbrite profile for current shows. \n– \nFloyd Kuptana was born on February 14\, 1964 at Cape Parry\, Northwest Territories. The arctic landscape ran through him as did the concrete shoreline of Lake Ontario\, and the city streets he walked on. He made his home where he was. He left behind an extraordinary wealth of creatures some of which you can see displayed at Gallery Arcturus\, a regular destination of the artist during the latter part of his career. \n– \nHere Kuptana engaged with other artists which often resulted in unusual collaborations or mutual challenges to work in new media including paint\, pastel and collage. Much of this work is recorded in books published by the gallery and available for sale or free viewing on our websites. \n– \nWe invite you to spend time with the sculptures [as well as the books available in our libraries] and to meet Floyd through his work. On view in the main floor gallery is “prayer for creation”\, the latest installation by the curator. \n– \nVoyage through nine exhibit spaces from Tuesday to Saturday\, 12 noon to 5:30pm. SUMMARY:"uncertainty is possibility"
DESCRIPTION:When you walk into the gallery this August you could find yourself in the midst of the latest exhibit\, \n“uncertainty is possibility” … \ndeborah harris and Sae Kimura have been creating a collage out of cloth in response to a recent paper collage series that mixes Picasso and Caravaggio. \nGallery curator harris recently took two of the noted painters’ compositions\, Guernica and The Entombment of Christ\, merging them into a large collage. Segments of this work are now on display in the main floor Genesis Gallery where she and her assistant Kimura are recreating the images from many scraps of fabric\, currently scattered across the space. \nAnother of the gallery’s unusual features is the development of exhibitions during opening hours; allowing visitors to witness the process. \nJoin Gallery Curator Deborah Harris and her assistant Sae Kimura as they create cloth “collages” in response to a series of works that mesh two well-known paintings by Picasso and Caravaggio. \nAnd in the east Genesis Gallery\, enjoy mixed media pieces by Terry FitzGerald including “The Tombs”\, “Spilt” and “Rise Up” along with poetry by Harris. \nTerry FitzGerald’s approach to art is to express what he is seeing around his world and then try to put that on canvas. He compiles his paint through organic methods and adds structure to the canvas with strange and interesting articles he has collected. DESCRIPTION:This is the first exhibit by collage and “assemblage” artist Eduard Zibnitski. His works are featured in the second-floor Collage Gallery at Gallery Arcturus\, along with collages by gallery artists. Says Zibnitski about his work: “Never being completely serious\, I feel fine with my art looking naïve\, ugly or confusing; and too plain\, or too rough sometimes too.
