SUMMARY:Early Days: Indigenous Art at the McMichael
DESCRIPTION:After a landmark international tour\, Early Days: Indigenous Art at the McMichael returns to the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. First presented in 2020-2021\, this critically acclaimed exhibition has become a defining exploration of the depth\, diversity\, and vitality of Indigenous art in Canada. This re-presented version is expanded including new and never before exhibited works. \nOrganized in close collaboration with Indigenous artists\, scholars\, and knowledge keepers\, Early Days presents more than 100 works from the McMichael’s permanent collection. Works on view span over two centuries- from 18th-century ceremonial regalia and trade items to the groundbreaking work of artists from the 1960s through the 1980s\, and powerful contemporary pieces by leading voices today. The exhibition showcases work by Norval Morrisseau\, Robert Houle\, Carl Beam\, Alex Janvier\, Shelly Niro\, Faye HeavyShield\, Rebecca Belmore\, Kent Monkman\, Meryl McMaster\, and many others. Their works—including painting\, sculpture\, printmaking\, textile\, and video— reveal the cultural continuity\, resilience\, and innovation of Indigenous artistic practices across generations.

SUMMARY:Close to Home
DESCRIPTION:In the early twentieth century members of the Group of Seven rose to prominence for their expressive landscape paintings of remote places across Canada\, making now iconic works in Algoma\, the Rocky Mountains\, the Artic\, and beyond. But not all of their dazzling works were made in these far-off places. Several members of the Group found inspiration in rural sites across Southern Ontario\, sometimes painting in our own backyard. \nClose to Home brings together paintings\, drawings\, and prints created in and around Kleinburg\, Vaughan\, Thornhill\, North York\, Markham\, Bolton\, Orillia\, Barrie\, and neighbouring locales. These works reflect the deep connections several Group members had to the region: J.E.H. MacDonald\, Arthur Lismer\, and Fred Varley all lived for a time in Thornhill; Franklin Carmichael grew up in Orillia and later lived in Lansing (North York); and Lawren Harris’s family maintained a property at Allandale on Lake Simcoe. From these vantage points\, the artists produced bold\, colourful works both en plein air and in their studios\, often focusing on agricultural life\, brilliant autumn foliage\, and the ever-changing southern Ontario sky.

SUMMARY:Old Growth: Masterworks by the Group of Seven & Contemporaries
DESCRIPTION:Old Growth invites visitors to experience the McMichael’s most iconic and enduring treasures\, artworks that have shaped the way generations have seen and felt the Canadian experience. \nLike the towering trees of an old-growth forest\, these works are deeply rooted in the country’s cultural memory and foundational to the McMichael’s identity. Featuring masterworks by canonical artists such as Tom Thomson\, Lawren Harris\, Emily Carr\, A.Y. Jackson\, and J.E.H. MacDonald\, the exhibition is organized geographically\, bringing visitors on a journey from the forests of Algoma to the peaks of the Rockies to the Arctic tundra. \nThese beloved works are essential to the story of the art of Canada\, but they are also part of a larger\, evolving conversation. Old Growth also includes works by often-overlooked contemporaries of the Group of Seven\, like Anne Savage\, Kathleen Daly Pepper\, and Bess Harris. Their contributions enrich the familiar narrative and will be a great discovery for many. Taking this broader lens\, Old Growth offers a more expansive understanding of Canadian art: one that honours the past while making room for other voices and perspectives.
