DESCRIPTION:When you reach a milestone in your life\, what’s the best way to mark it? By embracing it\, glorying in it – crowning it\, in fact – with an album of euphoric songs produced and polished in Nashville\, of course! \nThe name of Andy Bell’s third solo album\, Ten Crowns – like its cover art\, featuring his head on a glistening gold coin – is making Andy smile today: “It sounds like a pub!”\, he jokes. But behind that title lies ten songs of dazzling\, joyous pop\, inspired by the dancefloor and gospel\, completed in the year he turned 60. \nThe name also refers to the tarot\, he says: “The ten crowns on the tree of life\, which is a very powerful card to have. And I’d just got my crowns on my teeth done in Miami when I was trying to think about a title!”\, he laughs. \nAfter Erasure’s last two fabulous albums – 2020’s The Neon and its 2021 companionpiece Day-Glo (Based On A True Story)\, full of fascinating experimental reconstructions of The Neon’s tracks – Bell threw himself into writing with Dave Audé\, a producer with whom he’s been close for over a decade. Dave met Andy while DJing at a club in 2010 run by a mutual friend\, Stephen Moss\, who became Andy’s partner and husband (Stephen and Andy live together in London and Atlanta). \nWorking with someone who is not Vince Clarke introduces a new set of dynamics\, Andy says – although Erasure fans should know that forty years on\, they are still going strong and recently reunited to begin work on the next Erasure album. “I still love working with Vince\, but when you’re writing with another person\, it’s like the same feeling as going to another country or moving to America. You can just invent who you are\, become a brand new person.” \nAndy and Dave have already released two US dance chart number ones together: 2014’s ‘Aftermath (Here We Go)’ and 2016’s ‘True Original’\, the latter arriving in the same year that Dave won a Grammy for his remix of Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk’. After those dance tracks\, the pair “just kind of carried on writing as an exercise”\, Andy explains\, “and after that\, Dave moved his family to Nashville because LA was so expensive\, and so our writing took this kind of gospel-tinged Nashville twist.” \nHe describes how in Nashville there’s a church on every corner (“it reminded me of singing in choirs and cathedral school as a child\, where the spirit of the church is imbued in the music”). Not that Ten Crowns is a sombre\, spiritual set. It’s propulsive\, electronic\, passionate\, driven by the need to encounter new emotions and experiences as life races on. “I mean\, I’ve got everything I could possibly wish for\, you know\, I really have\, but that’s not to say I’m always fulfilled\,” Andy adds. “This album’s about picking yourself up\, dusting yourself off\, embracing life – and about taking that feeling on even when you’re fighting demons in the world\, like homophobia\, and fighting demons in yourself. It’s about being celebratory and uplifting.” \nTen Crowns also features Andy’s ultimate pop heroine – one he sang about on a track back in 2010\, ‘DHDQ’\, and now sings alongside on the yearningly wistful ‘Heart’s A Liar.’ “To have Debbie Harry singing with me – you know\, I still can’t quite believe it.” He’s known Blondie for years\, he explains\, and they have always been kind to him\, inviting him backstage at their gigs\, Chris Stein giving him hugs\, Debbie “sitting in the corner\, teasing me… she knows how much of a fan I am of the band” \nDebbie’s an inspiration to Andy in other ways\, too – although he hasn’t got the energy to emulate her\, he laughs. “I mean she’s eighty this year and one minute she’s in Australia\, the next she’s at Paris Fashion Week. Bloody hell!” The song is Andy’s rewrite of a track by English-Italian singer-songwriter and regular Dave Audé collaborator Luciana\, which Andy imagines being about two lovers being no good for each other. “Debbie gives it this gravitas and this coquettishness\, but she’s still very in command. And she recorded her vocals in the studio on Gay Pride\, which I thought when I heard it\, oh\, trust her!” \nTen Crowns begins\, however\, with a cosmic flash. ‘Breaking Thru The Interstellar’ sees Andy dance us “towards another paradise…ready for a new dimension / On our galactic journey”. Inspired by Andy’s love of reading BBC science magazines\, and the possible existence of wormholes that allow travel through space\, the song also reminds him of Boney M’s ‘Nightflight to Venus and Leila K’s ‘Open Sesame’. “It’s on first because I wanted to let people know we’re going to go for a ride now\, you know!” \n‘Lies So Deep’ follows\, a song about getting over the intensity of heartbreak\, where your heart is like a toffee apple but you’re desperate for somebody to come along and break it. Parts of it remind Andy of Stevie Nicks and Adele\, and he’s joined for the middle-eight by another Audé collaborator\, Sarah Potenza\, who broke through in the US on The Voice. “I wanted someone who was like Whitney Houston crossed with Yazoo\, and Sarah’s thing was country and gospel. But as soon as I heard her sing these lines\, I was like\, Oh\, my God – that’s it. She brings its emotions to life.” \nThe album’s full-blooded spirit continues thereafter. ‘For Today’ is radio-perfect\, Human League-style electronic pop. ‘Dance For Mercy’ uses the bassline of Sheila and B Devotion’s ‘Spacer’ as the brilliant foundation of a track about reconnecting with your time on earth (“my feet never touched the ground / Walked through the tunnel / Went towards the light / But they said that it wasn’t my time”). There’s a lot of dancing on this album\, Andy points out. “Even in Peterborough when I grew up\, with my mum and dad in working men’s clubs\, I would dance the whole evening. And my heart’s always been in dance music\, even if” – he rolls his eyes with self-deprecation – “I don’t really go to clubs anymore!” \nSome songs hint at the emotional journey Andy has been on in his life. “It’s so very hard to say hello / When your whole world comes crashing down\,” he sings\, movingly\, on ‘Don’t Cha Know’ (“the most ABBA song on here”). ‘Godspell’ moves from feelings of rapture to castigation in its pounding rhythms and fabulous lyrics: “Get thee behind me\, charlatan / Get thee behind me\, sycophant / Get thee behind me\, false prophet.” \nComments on modern life also sparkle lightly around Ten Crowns’ golden edges. Featuring a chorus written by Sisely Treasure of the band Shiny Toy Guns\, ‘Put Your \nEmpathy On Ice’ sharply satirises today’s overwhelming online world (“No-one can make up their minds / Because their minds are made up for them”). The stunning ‘Dawn Of Heaven’s Gate’ begins differently\, with a dream: “If there’s anything I could do for you / Absolutely anything / I would get down on my knees / And pray to the highest power / It wouldn’t be just any power / It would be the power to believe / That we could change everything.” \n“That song’s partly about this idea of wondering why in the hell we can’t all get on\,” Andy explains. “The whole album is like asking for salvation\, really\, in a world where everybody ultimately wants to be loved.” Ten Crowns concludes with a very moving moment\, a song that Andy thinks might partly inspired by his mum\, called ‘Thank You’. It’s about seeing the light as the end of life approaches\, directed to “all the people and friends / that came along for the ride / I thank you truly”. As euphoric funeral songs go\, it’s hard to think of any better. \nTen Crowns marks a properly majestic moment in Andy Bell’s forty-year career. His joy about what that holds\, and where it can go\, clearly excites him. “It’s my third sort of solo record [following 2005’s Electric Blue and 2010’s Non-Stop] and in Erasure\, our third album was our most successful out of all that we’ve done\, so maybe I’m taking that spirit with me!” \nTravelling into new dimensions and possibilities with gospel in the heart and dancing in the soul clearly suits him. Ten Crowns is Andy Bell imperial\, gleaming\, ready for his coronation.

DESCRIPTION:If the world is a cafe\, its ridiculous patrons babbling ridiculously all day long\, then Ron Mael is the guy on his own in the corner that you don’t notice\, quietly sipping his coffee. But he’s watching\, listening\, making notes. Those notes become songs for his band\, the legendary Sparks\, to be sung by his brother Russell in his unmistakeable falsetto. \nDespite the efforts of Edgar Wright’s superb 2021 documentary The Sparks Brothers\, which introduced the duo to a wider audience than ever before\, the exact creative dynamic between the siblings remains inscrutable\, as mysterious and unknowable as their private lives. \nThe one thing we know for certain is that Ron Mael is one of our most acutely perceptive observers of social mores. In a different discipline – dramaturg\, cartoonist\, novelist\, cineaste\, chronicler – he’d be a Moliere\, a Hogarth\, a Fitzgerald\, an Altman\, a Swift. He just happens to work within the medium of popular song. Another thing we know for certain is that Russell Mael has the asset of a talent to put those observations across in a uniquely arresting manner\, captivating as a frontman and gifted with a countertenor voice of extraordinary range. The alchemy between Ron on keys and Russell on vocals – Two Hands\, One Mouth\, to invoke the name of one of their tours – is simply what they do. And they’ve rarely done it better than on MAD!\, the band’s 28th studio album. \nReleased in May 2025 on new label home Transgressive Records\, MAD! finds Ron and Russell examining cultural phenomena such as branded backpacks\, tattoos\, performative devotion (whether to a God\, a lover\, a celebrity or a sports team)\, the hegemony of banter\, and the rise of influencers. (‘Running Up A Tab At The Hotel For The Fab’ seems to be inspired by the modern-day parable of fake German heiress Anna Delvey\, or at least someone very similar: “Will you visit me in Rykers?”) \nThe satire is never on-the-nose\, always retaining enough ambiguity for the listener to fill in the blanks. And the exquisitely unusual lexicon (you won’t hear the word ‘epistemology’ on many other albums this year) and cultural references (“Howard Hughes in Jordan 2s” on lead single ‘Do Things My Own Way’)\, leap out on every listen. \nSome perennial Sparks themes are revisited. ‘A Long Red Light’\, a song about thwarted desires and dreams\, the world non-consensually pressing Pause on your life\, inevitably recalls classics such as ‘When Do I Get To Sing My Way?’ and ‘Your Call Is Very Important To Us\, Please Hold’. \nMusically there are nods to New Wave\, Synthpop\, Art Rock and Electronic Opera – all genres Sparks had hands in pioneering\, or straight-up invented. When you hear echoes of other artists\, from Air to Shostakovich\, you remind yourself that they’re all people who Sparks influenced in the first place. (Well\, maybe not Shostakovich.) \nUltimately\, however\, MAD! is a modern record\, which belongs in\, and speaks to\, the modern world. Which is all the more remarkable when you consider the vintage of its creators. \nMost acts\, by the time they’ve been making music together across seven different decades\, would have slowed to a crawl\, creakily playing the oldies on the heritage circuit and releasing nothing more modern than the occasional Greatest Hits collection. \nSparks aren’t most acts. If anything\, their rate of productivity has sped up in recent years: since the millennium the duo have released eight new studio albums (including\, in 2024\, the original Sparks 2013 album recording of Annette)\, a radio opera (The Seduction Of Ingmar Bergman)\, a side-project (Franz Ferdinand collaboration FFS)\, a live album\, a film musical (2021’s Annette\, which won a ‘Best Director award for Leos Carax and the Best Original Score at the César Awards for the Maels)\, and several compilations (notably 2019’s career-spanning Past Tense)\, toured the world numerous times\, as well as appearing in the aforementioned The Sparks Brothers. Their laurels remain resoundingly unrested-upon. \nRon Mael (keyboards\, songwriting\, moustache) and his younger brother Russell (singing\, charisma\, looks-looks-looks) were born and raised in Los Angeles\, and first recorded under the name Urban Renewal Project and subsequently Halfnelson\, before settling on the name Sparks in 1972. Despite being mentored and produced by Todd Rundgren and signed by Bob Dylan’s manager Albert Grossman\, American audiences initially proved unreceptive to Sparks’ uniquely arch\, ironic aesthetic\, and their breakthrough came instead after they relocated to London with a new backing band\, scoring a huge hit in 1974 with the cinematic\, staccato single ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us’\, and unleashing full-scale Sparksmania in the UK. \nIn the decades since\, one thing that has never faltered is their commitment to artistic innovation. They’ve moved through numerous genres and phases\, including Art-Glam (1974’s mega-selling Kimono My House)\, Neo-Charleston (1975’s Tony Visconti-produced Indiscreet)\, electronic disco (1979’s Giorgio Moroder collaboration No.1 In Heaven\, which essentially invented the synth duo)\, synthpop (1994’s glorious Gratuitous Sax & Senseless Violins) and sampler opera (2002’s career-rebooting Lil’ Beethoven). The only common threads\, throughout each era\, are the exquisite wit of Ron’s lyrics and the complexity of his arrangements\, and Russell’s heavenly voice. \nIt’s perhaps a result of this restlessness\, and their refusal to double down on a safe bet by following the easy commercial path\, that Sparks’ popularity has been so episodic and unpredictable\, both geographically and temporally\, their successes springing up across the planet in odd places at odd times. In 1980\, for example\, they topped the French charts with the sublime ‘When I’m With You’. In 1994 the poignant ‘When Do I Get To Sing My Way?’ reached the German Top 10. And their homeland finally caught on in the Eighties\, when they were mistaken by many Americans for New Wave novices. \nBelatedly\, however\, the whole world has woken up to Ron and Russell’s genius. They have become regular visitors to the upper echelons of the charts: curiously\, the last three Sparks albums (2017’s Hippopotamus\, 2020’s A Steady Drip\, Drip\, Drip and 2023’s The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte) all reached No.7 in the UK. It would be a surprise if MAD! didn’t do the same\, or even better. \nAnd\, after all these years\, they continue to break new ground. Their 2025 tour\, the first leg of which begins on 8 June in Japan\, ends on 8 July in Milan. Although Russell performed in Italy once as part of a Sgt Pepper anniversary concert and both brothers played there with FFS\, this will be the first-ever Italian Sparks gig. \nMAD! opens with the song ‘Do Things My Own Way’\, a piece of typically forward-facing progressive pop which is the album’s lead single and focus track. But it also functions as something of a manifesto for the Maels themselves. Because Sparks are a band who have always\, always done things their own way.

DESCRIPTION:Having gathered a cult following around art rock gallops like Johnny Yen in the ’80s\, they broke through to mainstream success with their major label debut Gold Mother (1990)\, followed by a slew of euphoric anthems: Come Home\, Sit Down\, and Laid. Their fifth album Laid saw them break the US charts\, while Whiplash (1997)\, Millionaires (1999) and Pleased To Meet You (2001) cemented their standing as a classic 1990s act with Tomorrow\, She’s A Star and Just Like Fred Astaire. James returned from a 6-year hiatus with 2008’s Hey Ma\, followed by Girl at the End of the World (2016)\, Living in Extraordinary Times (2018)\, and All The Colours Of You (2021) – returning to a sustained period in the upper echelons of the album chart. Their 40th anniversary in 2023 was celebrated with orchestral reworkings via Be Opened By The Wonderful – but this was far from a full stop. James released their 18th album Yummy on 12 April 2024\, which reached #1 in the UK Albums Chart – their first studio album to do so. One of their most prescient releases\, Yummy deals with politics\, AI\, and conspiracy theories\, and documents the creative process of a band who continues to evolve and defy expectations. Best described by MOJO: “after 18 LPs and over four interrupted decades at the coalface\, James are still re-inventing themselves.” \nThis year\, the band will be releasing the album and Blu-ray James: Live at The Acropolis on May 2nd\, which was recorded on the 10th July 2023 at the iconic Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens. They will also embark on a summer of live shows across the UK\, Spain\, Portugal\, and beyond.
