SUMMARY:HOMAGE TO THE KOBZAR -  Bandura Recital
DESCRIPTION:Bandurist Victor Mishalow has made a significant contribution to  Ukrainian music in Canada\, both through his performances and writings.  He formed the original Canadian Bandurist Capella in 1991\, and  introduced many young people to this ancient Ukrainian instrument. Born  in Sydney\, Australia\, Victor was the first person in that country to do  his high school practical music performance exam on the bandura. Since  then\, Victor has made it his life’s passion and work. He graduated from  Sydney University with a double major in Musicology and  Ethno-Musicology\, and did his postgraduate studies at the Kyiv  Conservatory for master’s in music. Victor has performed in North  America\, Europe and Australia\, and has played solo performances in  Carnegie Hall\, Massey Hall\, and the Sydney Opera House. SUMMARY:Imperishable: deconstructing Ukrainian embroidery patterns
DESCRIPTION:The Shevchenko Museum\, 1604 Bloor Street West\, Toronto\, cordially  invites you to the opening of IMPERISHABLE: Deconstructing Ukrainian  Embroidery Patterns\, an exhibition of paintings and media art by artist  Rob Gill\, on Friday\, November 7 at 6pm. \nMr. Gill attended Queen’s University in Kingston for a Bachelor of  Fine arts specialising in painting and has been a professional media  artist for nearly thirty years. About a decade ago\, the artist moved  from Muskoka to Toronto and about eight years ago\, to the west end by  High Park\, where he discovered a large Ukrainian population. \nAs a second generation Ukrainian on his mother’s side\, and having  been raised with the language\, the cultural traditions\, and the rich  craftwork\, he is particularly fascinated by ancient Ukrainian geometric  embroidery patterns and the meanings they contain. \nIn this exhibition\, Rob Gill seeks to engage with that ancient\,  sacred art\, uncover some of its spiritual content\, and explore his  Ukrainian heritage by applying various of his own processes to the  patterns via painting\, print\, computer animation\, software design\, and  audio. Many of his animations are joined by music drawn from the  Ukrainian Art Song Project which runs through software to produce the  accompanying audio. \nThe artist will be selling his original paintings\, as well as  inexpensive inkjet prints\, and limited edition giclee prints.  Accompanying each painting is an audio album as well. 10% of all sales  will be donated to the Ukraine war effort. \nDoors open at 6pm. Artist’s slide-show talk and live performance of  digital art with music at 7pm. Light refreshments will be served. \nThe exhibition will be on display until November 28\, 2025. SUMMARY:Through the Lens of Ukrainian Belonging
DESCRIPTION:The Shevchenko Museum cordially invites you to the opening of Through  the Lens of Ukrainian Belonging\, a solo exhibition of paintings by  Ukrainian Canadian artist Olga Polstvin at 1604 Bloor St. West\, Toronto\,  Ontario\, on Friday\, September 26\, 2025 at 6 PM. \nOlga Polstvin is a multidisciplinary artist\, cultural leader\, and  Master of Arts Leadership candidate at Queen’s University whose practice  bridges painting\, storytelling\, and community engagement. Born in Kyiv\,  Ukraine\, she carries forward the resilience and cultural memory of her  heritage\, weaving themes of belonging\, healing\, and identity into her  work. \nHer artistic inspiration is drawn from the love of her native  Ukrainian land – its beauty\, nature\, culture\, customs\, and traditions.  She sees art as a bridge between heritage and future\, personal memory  and collective resilience — a lens through which belonging is not only  remembered but continually reimagined. \nAfter immigrating to Canada\, Olga continued to explore her identity  through art. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and community  spaces across Toronto and beyond\, including the Glendon Gallery and the  McCormick Gallery\, and she is a member of the International Watercolour  Society\, Canadian Chapter. Her projects often integrate visual art\,  performance\, and community-based programming\, with a focus on  cultivating spaces of belonging and resilience.Polstvin’s forthcoming solo exhibition\, Through the Lens of Ukrainian  Belonging at the Shevchenko Museum\, is her most personal work to date.  Carrying the weight of personal loss — the passing of her mother and  grandmother in the shadow of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine —  the exhibition reflects on language\, memory\, grief\, and the enduring  song of Ukrainian identity. \nTo cite the artist\, “My art is rooted in belonging. For me\, to be  Ukrainian is not only a cultural identity but a lived experience —  carried in the healing wisdom of plants\, the dignity of language\, the  resilience of memory\, and the songs that call us home.” \nThe exhibition\, Through the Lens of Ukrainian Belonging\, will run at  the Shevchenko Museum until October 31\, 2025.  Gallery hours: Mon-Wed\,  Fri 10am – 4pm; Thurs 12-7pm\, weekends and holidays by appointment.
