DESCRIPTION:Charismatic and world-renowned trumpeter Avishai Cohen is globally recognized as a musician with an individual sound and a questing spirit\, an ever-creative player-composer open to multiple strains of jazz and active as a leader\, co-leader\, and sideman. Aside from the acclaimed work with his quartet over the last several years\, and previously his trio work under the moniker Triveni\, the trumpeter has also recorded and toured the world as part of the Mark Turner Quartet\, the SFJAZZ Collective\, Jazz100\, Zakir Hussain\, and the 3 Cohens Sextet – with his sister\, clarinetist-saxophonist Anat\, and brother\, saxophonist Yuval. \nCohen launched his exuberant band Big Vicious in 2014\, rounding up players to shape the music from the ground up and co-authoring much of its newest material together with them. The band draws upon long-standing friendships: Avishai Cohen and guitarist Uzi Ramirez attended the same high school\, while guitarist/bassist Yonatan Albalak and drummer Aviv Cohen have played together in diverse ensembles since the early 2000s. Ziv Ravitz\, recruited as second drummer in 2018\, completed the line-up\, with a brief to bring some of the colours and energies of Avishai’s acoustic quartet — with whom Ziv has toured extensively — into the Vicious admixture. \n“We’re all coming from jazz\, but some of us left it earlier\,” Avishai says\, summing up the musical range of his bandmates. “Everyone’s bringing in their backgrounds\, and that becomes part of the sound of the band.” Textures from electronic\, ambient\, and psychedelic music are all part of the blend\, as are grooves and beats from rock\, pop\, trip-hop and more. “In the combination of everything\, this is a magical group\,” adds Ravitz. “It’s very special because you would expect it to explode\, with total drama. But the music is deep\, and very melodic.” \nNamed as the Artistic Director of the International Jerusalem Festival\, Cohen has also been voted a Rising Star on three consecutive occasions in the DownBeat Critics Poll.

Originally from Fontainebleau\, France\, Wrembel is renowned for his masterful blend of jazz\, gypsy swing and world music enchanting audiences across the globe with his unique sound. Rolling Stone called him “…a revelation.” \nWrembel is a highly respected composer with original compositions featured in the acclaimed films Midnight in Paris (“Bistro Fada”) and Vicky Cristina Barcelona (“Big Brother”). Midnight in Paris won the Grammy Award for “Best Compilation Soundtrack.” At the 2012 Academy Awards\, Wrembel was handpicked by renowned composer Hans Zimmer to join his “All Star Band” performing alongside luminaries like Esperanza Spalding\, Pharrell\, and Sheila E. \nWith an impressive discography of over 20 albums released under his name and the pseudonym\, The Django Experiment\, Wrembel released Triptych – 3 CDs entitled Phase 1\, 2 and 3 – recorded with Canadian improvisational pianist Jean-Michel Pilc in April of 2024\, receiving glowing press in Downbeat\, Guitar Player Magazine\, Acoustic Guitar Magazine\, New York Jazz Record and more. \nHis latest recording\, Django New Orleans II: Hors-Série\, was released in November of 2025. SUMMARY:The Big Band Slam
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the Big Band Slam brings together high school bands from across the Greater Toronto Area for an afternoon of trumpet blasting\, trombone sliding\, sax squealing excitement – a chance to showcase some of the outstanding music being made by high school music students across the city. A different special guest is selected to work with the bands each year\, attending rehearsals in advance and performing with each band on the day of the Slam. \nThis year’s guest artist is Christian Overton\, and the participating bands are: \nJAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band\, led by Kelsley GrantYork Mills Jazz Band\, led by Elena JubinvilleSenator O’Connor Senior Jazz Ensemble\, led by Stephen Griffiths \nOriginally from Sudbury Ontario\, Christian Overton is now one of the most in demand trombonists and composer/arrangers in Toronto. He’s played with a huge range of artists from jazz legends Danilo Perez and John Patitucci to Canadian legends Don Thompson and Guido Basso\, to rock bands Sloan\, and Glass Tiger\, Hip Hop artist Lauryn Hill\, the legendary Frankie Valli\, as well as classical masters Jens Lindemann and Alain Trudel to children’s entertainer Fred Penner and in pit orchestras like the musical Singin’ In The Rain. \nChristian also has his own jazz quintet\, leads The Composers Collective Big Band and is the founder of Clovertone Music\, a publishing company dedicated to publishing Canadian composers works for the educational market. Christian was a finalist for the Ontario Arts Council Louis Applebaum composers award in 2019 and teaches arranging at the University of Toronto and Humber Polytechnic. His group the Composers Collective Big Band just released their newest record “The Toronto Project” to great acclaim.

Angela and Ray are celebrating the release of their new album\, In the Wonder of the Night\, a vocal jazz collection of standards and originals that explore how nighttime makes space for romance\, connection\, and contemplation. \n \nPossessing a “winsome\, brightly-burnished\, pliable voice\, ample emotional intelligence\, and conspicuously good taste… now is the time for Angela Verbrugge”\, writes Andrew Gilbert for JazzTimes Magazine. Inspired by Carmen McRae\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Anita O’Day\, and other jazz vocalists popular in 1940s/50s\, Angela brings tenderness\, wit\, and passion to her interpretations of standards. Her originals are inspired by the classic Gershwin-Cole Porter tradition. Her collaborations include songwriting with Caity Gyorgy\, Ken Fowser\, Nick Hempton\, Neal Miner and Ray Gallon. \n \nSince 2021\, Angela has performed across Japan\, Taiwan\, Hong Kong\, Turkiye\, England\, Germany\, Luxembourg\, Italy\, France\, and from coast-to-coast in Canada. She has won reader polls in JazzTimes and All About Jazz\, released four acclaimed albums on US and German record labels\, and was recently nominated for Jazz Artist of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards. Her music is played by CBC Saturday Night Jazz\, and on prominent jazz programs around the world. Her catalogue has accumulated almost a million streams across music platforms. DESCRIPTION:Pianist Michael Arnowitt is joined by Toronto favourites Phil Albert on upright bass and Nico Dann on drums for a colourful and lively set of acoustic jazz Saturday\, November 8 at 2 pm at The Rex\,194 Queen Street West. The trio will perform jazz classics such as Benny Golson’s stylish Along Came Betty\, Miles Davis’ evocative Nardis\, music by Wayne Shorter\, jazz arrangements of the Beatles’ She’s Leaving Home and Eleanor Rigby\, and improvisations on tunes from more recent decades by Brad Mehldau and Dave Holland. A highlight of the set will be Michael Arnowitt’s jazz arrangement “The Stream” based on J.S. Bach’s atmospheric and moody Fugue in C-sharp minor from the Well-Tempered Keyboard\, transformed into the language of jazz .
