As Mega Rock Tours go, U2's international Zooropa jaunt back in 93 stands as one that demands to be caught on film. This one-time pay-per-view concert from November 93 captures the short-attention-span aesthetic perfectly, relying on jittery early-90s music video cuts, tons of wide-angle panoramas of the astounding multi-screen stage set-up, shifts between grainy black-and-white and lush light-saturated video, superimposed textual mottoes ("Silence = Death") and Bono prancing about in embarrassing outfits. The sound is superb, whether the band's rocking rafters with the echoing intro of With Or Without You or marooned in the middle of the audience on a pared-down island stage.
The set list is solid as well, with the best Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby tracks sprinkled amidst the Zooropa material, as well as an odd whirl through Satellite Of Love, which finds Bono dueting with Lou Reed-on-TV, and an embarrassing cover of Unchained Melody.
The real problem is that for such an elaborate stage show (from a time when the band's future was uncertain), you really need bonus features to get the full Zoo TV picture, and this package doesn't have them. A different version contains a full second disc packed with fan confessions, band interviews and additional dirt. Hold out for that one.
