Martin Parr

MARTIN PARR Metro Hall (south side of King West, east of John), to June 2.

The influential British Magnum member has exhibited widely and published dozens of photo books since the 80s. Travelling the world, he turns a keen eye on human foibles – including what we choose to eat. About half of the 52 photographs on outdoor hoardings along King West were made in Toronto, while others depict such subjects as Mexican sugar skulls and English breakfasts. It’s not your usual food porn: Parr, using saturated colour achieved through flash photography, has a way of bringing out the absurd side of our foodstuffs – as he does for everything he shoots – making them look at once appetizing, silly and garish.
